Dwayne Johnson becomes MMA legend Mark Kerr in Benny Safdie’s ‘The Smashing Machine’

Dwayne Johnson’s appearance is almost indistinguishable in the initial glimpse of his forthcoming A24 drama “The Smashing Machine,” helmed by Benny Safdie and featuring his “Jungle Cruise” co-star Emily Blunt. In this film, Johnson portrays the renowned MMA fighter Mark Kerr, who faced challenges with addiction and his marital life while attaining legendary status in the sport. Blunt takes on the role of Dawn Staples, Kerr’s wife. Currently, the film is in the production phase.

Johnson showcases his impressive physique reminiscent of Kerr in “The Smashing Machine” initial appearance, along with the addition of facial prosthetics to embody the MMA icon. Kerr, a distinguished figure in the sport, achieved significant milestones such as being a two-time UFC Heavyweight Tournament Champion and securing victory in the World Vale Tudo Championship tournament. Throughout his illustrious career, he amassed an impressive collection of over two dozen MMA titles.

Safdie, in his solo feature directorial debut, presents “The Smashing Machine,” following his successful collaborations with his brother Josh on indie hits like “Good Time” and “Uncut Gems” under A24. Benny, who starred alongside Blunt in Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer,” initially connected with Safdie on this project in 2019. However, due to the pandemic, they lost touch and had to put the film on hold. Years later, during a phone conversation between Johnson and Blunt, Blunt revealed that she had recently watched the 2002 documentary “The Smashing Machine: The Life and Times of Extreme Fighter Mark Kerr” and encouraged Johnson to pursue making this movie.

‘The Smashing Machine’

Johnson had previously expressed to Variety his interest in “The Smashing Machine” due to Benny’s desire to create and his constant pursuit of pushing boundaries with raw and authentic stories, often delving into uncomfortable and captivating characters. At this stage of his career, Johnson is determined to challenge himself in ways he hasn’t before, aiming to make films that hold significance and delve into the depths of humanity, exploring both struggle and pain.

Johnson and Dany Garcia, through Seven Bucks Productions, are collaborating with Safdie’s Out for the Count banner, as well as Eli Bush and David Koplan, to produce the film.

“The Smashing Machine” release date has not been announced by A24 yet.
